Hi-n-Dry refers to a physical location (a loft in Cambridge, MA) as well as a motley assemblage of characters and perhaps even a way of life. The space was the home and studio of Morphine frontman Mark Sandman. Since Mark's death in 1999, the surviving Morphine members Billy Conway and Dana Colley have turned the loft into a vibrant working studio where his spirit of musical exploration is very much alive. Billy and I made the Five Stories and Songs for a Hurricane records up there together, and a more relaxed, creative, and inspiring place to make records I truly can't imagine. The room is all warm brick and windows, so that the light (and sometimes the sounds) of the world are with you as you record. The place oozes vibe and it's stuffed with amazing and unusual instruments that can inspire unexpected ideas. Occasionally, they even turn out to have been good ones.

Billy Conway is a category of one, occupying his own plane of profound musicality, extreme lovelyness of character, and barely-graspable philosophical musings.   He's an intoxicating drummer, a rock & roll donkey farmer, a reluctant producer, and one of my favorite people to be in a room with whether music is being played or not. In addition to his years with Treat Her Right and Morphine, Billy's been a part of many musical happenings  His most recent band is the dangerously groovy Twinemen, which he formed with Dana Colley and Laurie Sargent.

Also at the epicenter of the Hi-n-Dry universe is Andrew Mazzone, Esquire, who brought his killer bass playing, sonic instincts, and rest-of-lovely-self to both the records I made at Hi-n-Dry.  Andrew these days plays with the almighty Dennis Brennan and his own band The Family Jewels, among others.

Beyond all this, there's a boatload of other interesting bands within the orbit of Hi-n-Dry, so go take a look.
