Session Americana

Session AmericanaFirst, this is a really cool band.  Second, it is teeming with people I've conspired with at various times. For starters, there's Ry Cavanaugh, who is surprisingly good at channeling Prince for a white guy from Connecticut, and also really good at causing trouble (i.e. starting bands). Then there's Sean Staples, who has a surprisingly strong resemblance to the Prince of Peace for a white guy from Massachusetts, and who rocks the mandolin perhaps harder than it knew it could be rocked. For a magical lovely while the three of us had a band called Vinal Avenue String Band, which played only the best places (Somerville, MA., Ireland), and (mostly) only the best songs we could think of, by Bob Marley and Lucinda Williams and Michael Hurley and Ralph Stanley, as well as a bunch we wrote. As a bonus, these shows usually happened on Monday nights, which was a nice way of weeding out sane, responsible people from the crowd.  Both of these guys have contributed an awful lot to my musical projects, on stage and on record, not even to mention the more intangible realm of inspiration.

SA also includes Kimon Kirk, a more recent addition to the circle of trust. Kimon played bass on a bunch of the release shows for Strange Conversation, overcoming a sucky rented bass to play quite mightily. He sings great too, and keeps those around him constantly wowed by a seemingly bottomless supply of extra-hip thrift-store shirts. In addition I suspect that he harbors a deep and secret love for the vocal stylings of Michael MacDonald, but this remains unconfirmed as of this writing.

Yet another member of this gang is Billy Beard, who has accompanied me on drums on numerous occasions (both planned and underplanned) in the past, and is most excellent at funny voices. Beardo plays in approximately 55,000 bands right now and has in the past graced the music of Patty Griffin, Kim Richey, Lori McKenna, Melissa Ferrick, and countless others. He is also largely responsible for making Toad and the Lizard Lounge two of the best music clubs in the Boston vicinity. We are fairly certain that Billy does not sleep, ever.

Session Americana is loose the way you want a band to be and tight the way you want a band to be. I can't describe them well but I can tell you that you really want to see them play. If this is geographically impossible for you, you should probably move here, or at the very least acquire their great double album Table Top People
