SPRINGING
JOHNNY CASH // WINDSOR CT // SPARKLETOWN 3 // TOWN & CITY FEST
Hi everyone, I’m taking a quick break from dwelling on the collapse of civilization to tell you about a few lovely things coming up as follows!
JOHNNY CASH TRIBUTE SHOW // A few times a year Signature Sounds puts together a show celebrating the work of a particular icon of songwriting. I’ve gotten to be a part of several of them over the years and it’s always an inspiring, surprising, joyful scene. This afternoon show - *3:00pm* Sunday, March 22 at the Academy of Music in Northampton MA - will certainly be a blast, with songs from the Cashalogue performed by the Suitcase Junket, The Lonesome Brothers, Ward Hayden & the Outliers, Lisa Bastoni, Christa Joy, and yours truly, with a great house band. I’ve learned some deep cuts for the occasion and can’t wait to take them for a spin!
WINDSOR ARTS CENTER // My pal Zak Trojano moved to Connecticut, and he misses his Massachusetts friends so much that he set up a whole show just so we could hang out. At *2:00pm* Saturday, March 28, at the Windsor Arts Center, I’ll convene with Zak, Jeffrey Foucault, and Matt Lorenz aka the Suitcase Junket, to sit on stage together and swap songs. Hopefully you can squeeze it in amidst your No Kings activities!
SPARKLETOWN 3 // Once again we’ll gather in beloved community (and sequins) to remember and celebrate our much-missed comrade Kate Lorenz. On Saturday April 11 at the Shea Theater in Turners Falls, MA, we’ll play songs Kate wrote and songs she loved, and try to conjure up the joyful rambunctious energy she brought into every situation. With The Suitcase Junket, Caitlin Canty, Zak Trojano, Julia Read, the Rear Defrosters, and Kate’s own band the Constellations. Big feelings at this one, come soak them up.
LOWELL FEST // Excited to play a set at Lowell’s Town and City Festival, at the Merrimack Rep Theater on Friday, May 1 at 7:00 pm. I’m trying out a new acoustic trio format for this one, looking forward to hearing how the songs sound through that lens. After our set, John Doe & David Lowery will do some version of rocking out. Should be a cool night any way you slice it!
*****************
I’ve been feeling so grateful for music, and for being able to play it with people I love, and for the people who go out of their way to listen. When I spend time immersed in a room where music is happening, all the anxiety, rage and dread of the current moment is temporarily replaced by trust and hope. I’m not performing a ton this spring, working on some longer-term musical projects at home while my kid finishes her last semester of high school (insert ugly-cry emoji here). But even if none of my shows aren’t in your neighborhood, I really encourage you to go find a room with music in it. You’ll walk out of there calmer, braver, and more connected to your own light and that of the human beings around you, and that feels like medicine we can all use.
Thankyou everyone and see you out there in this wild world. *kd
