THANKS WEST COAST // ROSE // NORTHEAST MAY
Well we’re deep into the second half of the album-release marathon, and I think I’m pretty tired under there somewhere but still coasting along on adrenaline and the beautiful energy that flowed back to us every night on our west coast run. Thanks to all the great venues and the audiences for coming out and filling the rooms with lovely open-hearted energy. Thanks to old friend Chris Pureka for amazing opening sets and road companionship in the Northwest. Thanks to new friend Kristen Ford for joining us at the Ivy Room and thanks to Erik Koskinen for pulling double shifts to open various shows along the way. I’m so lucky to be playing with this amazing band - Erik on guitars, Jeremy Moses Curtis on bass and Ray Rizzo on drums - and very happy we have another leg still to play!
ROSE // It was a treat to leave behind the headliner role for a few days and sneak up to Canada to open two shows on my friend Rose Cousins’ release tour. Rose and I released our new records one week apart, and when we shared the finished albums with each other last year we were surprised by many coincidental similarities - the themes, the artwork, the wolf howls! Anyway we’ve supported each other emotionally through the arc of the process and we’re also trading a bit of literal support on the road - I opened her gorgeous shows in Toronto and Hamilton last week, and she’ll come down to the US to open my shows in DC, Brooklyn, Northampton, and Groton MA. I can’t wait to continue our international exchange program, sing together more, and hear her songs again. Photographer Wade Muir took some amazing shots of our show, here’s one to give you a sense:
NORTHEAST // May brings the final installment of release shows for the moment: we’ll get back on the horse and point it across the Hudson to play the Cock’n’Bull in Galway NY May 1. This is a restaurant and venue built into an old barn, and a super comfy and welcoming place to play. Then we’ll trek up to play one of our all-time favorites, Stone Mt Arts Center in Brownfield ME on May 2. We love this venue and the people who run it, partly but not solely because they always bake us a cake, and the icing on this particular cake is that esteemed spouse Jeffrey Foucault will take a break from fishing and reorganizing the basement to come up and share the bill with us. Two shows at opposite ends of Vermont round out the weekend: The Coffee Bar in Bennington VT on May 3, a tiny cozy music haven, and ZenBarn in Waterbury VT on May 4, a lovely and rather cavernous barn. Erik Koskinen, whose songs are essential and addictive, opens all of these except for Stone Mountain.
After a night to regroup we’ll drive south and pick up the aforementioned Rose Cousins, who opens the rest of the shows, and return to our old pal Jammin Java in Vienna VA on May 7. Then we head up to my ancestral homeland, where Ana Egge will join me and Rose for a superbill at Littlefield in Brooklyn NY on May 8. We’ll swing homewards to play the Iron Horse in Northampton MA on May 9, and cap it all off at the gorgeous Groton Hill Music Center on May 10.
Both Northampton and Groton are running very low on tickets so be warned! On the other end of the spectrum, it’s tough to get people out in NYC these days, so please feel free to send your city people our way. Finally, Bostonians, I can’t stress enough how much we focused on trying to play in town, but the scheduling gods for some reason decided to be assholes about it… I promise we’ll play a proper Somerville/Cambridge show at the earliest opportunity but in the meantime come hang in Groton!
