AUGUST INTO SEPTEMBER

NOWHERE ELSE // SESSION AMERICANA // GRANT-LEE // GRAND MARAIS

Hi folks, after a busy spring touring with the band and a mostly off-stage summer, I’m looking forward to a bunch of collaborative situations over the next month. Read on for details on the various plans and casts of characters…

NOWHERE ELSE FEST // So excited to check out this sweet annual party thrown by Over the Rhine on their property in rural Ohio, and commune with a veritable slew of incredible musicians: Amy Helm, Peter Mulvey, Jeffrey Martin, John Paul White, Joy Clark, and more. Nowhere Else Festival can’t wait to meet ya!

SESSION AMERICANA // Every now and the stars align for me to sit in with my friends in the rowdy, globetrotting band Session Americana. This scenario entails me joining the band on acoustic guitar, subpar fiddle, occasional bass, and backing vocals - as well as fronting a few of my own songs with the boys. Session is a band best experienced live, and I’m looking forward to helping them make their magic in Fall River, MA at the Narrows Center for the Arts on 9/5; New Haven, CT as part of the CT Folk Festival on 9/6; and Groton, MA at the gorgeous Groton Hill Music Center on 9/7. The music is always a blast and the fact that I’m not responsible for any logistics makes these shows feel like a vacation on the beach, if the beach was an elderly Econoline van.

GRANT-LEE // I’ve admired the songs of Grant-Lee Phillips for years, but we’ve never met in person, so I’m totally thrilled to join the bill for a few shows on the release tour for his new record In the Hour of Dust (9/5/25). We’ll be working our way up the City Wineries (Cities Winery?) of the east, starting in Philly at City Winery Philadelphia on 9/8, stopping into New York to play City Winery NYC on 9/10, and winding up back in MA at City Winery Boston on 9/11. Playing to some new faces and then kicking back in the wings to soak up Grant’s new songs sounds like a great job description to me; come join us if you’re in the neighborhood!

DATE NIGHT IN GRAND MARAIS // One perk of being married to another songwriter is that occasionally your dates are tax-deductible; along these lines I’ll be performing with Esteemed Spouse Jeffrey Foucault at the annual “Unplugged” festival, Friday 9/19 at the North House Folk School in Grand Marais, MN. We’ll set up on stage together, swap songs, and do our best to back each other up according to the Hippocratic oath, and then hang out by the shores of Lake Superior. The last time I swam in that water it was late July and it was cold enough that it felt like being set on fire, in the best possible way. I’ll let you know what late September is like if we survive.

***************

As for the world, it’s hard to know what to do with it right now, isn’t it? Personally I’m giving what I can to try to support Gaza - World Central Kitchen, World Food Programme, Palestine Childrens Relief Fund, to name a few groups, even though all of them are limited in what they can do so long as the corridors to deliver aid are, unconscionably, clamped down. Here at home, what feels the most productive to me at the moment is to dial into state and local efforts. Finding ways to look out for neighbors, and reinforcing the fabric of respect and humanity in our communities, which is our best hope to make it through this mess to something better. This is where gathering around music can be of some concrete use, for both the performers and the audience, and I’m looking forward to spending time in that galvanizing space with old friends, and friends-to-be, and maybe you, too?

Anyway I hope everyone’s well, and squeezing all the last juice out of summer. *kd
